More on Archives

Hello readers, how have you been? I am here again with another blog post on Archives and I know that last time when I initially introduced the Archives as a topic to you, I didn’t go too much into detail about it. Well luckily for you today I will be addressing Archives in more detail to bring you a better understanding of what Archives are and what they are about.

Now, for you to know what archives are, you should understand that archives can be defined in more than one way because they can consist of almost anything from things like financial records to historical records to other tangible and intangible (digital) documents and objects that are preserved for memories. Archives are collected and group together for many other different purposed such as legal purposes, for learning and research purposes, to organize and analyze the archive and much more. However, depending on what the purpose of the archive is, and what it contains you will find different creators and users of archives who help to collect, organize, and preserve archives. Professionals like archivists tend to different types of archives, accountants tend to the business transaction records of business and you can also have your regular everyday person like me or you who can create our own archives for whatever purpose suits us.

The thing about archives is that a lot of us have created and/or used an archive without even knowing that they did. It could have been a simple photo album of the time you went somewhere or of a family event, it could be a collection of physical objects like books, artwork, games, etc.

Like some of you may be before you have heard about Archives but were not really sure what it was and what its purpose was. Before knowing all that I now know about archives, I knew that it was used to store things that you might not need right now but you do not want to get rid of it, main saving it for future purposes when it is needed. As I said before we have all used or created an archive without knowing it and I am one of those persons. After thinking back to if I have ever utilized one, I realized that for many of the research that I did for a Marketing course I took before I had had to go through a lot of archives and analyze the information within them; plus, there were other instances where I realized that we used archives more than we realized whether or not it is open to the public or not.

To help me understand archives a little better I did some researched The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is an actual museum located in Washington, D.C., US but since the pandemic, it has gone digital for the time being. This archive was created by the US government and it consists of the American Founding Documents, Veteran Service Records, Catalogues to trace your Ancestors, etc. It is also a credible source that can support historical research for both teaching and learning.

By now I would like to think that you guys have a better understanding of what archives are, what they are used for, and why they are important. The Photo Archive that I did in my most recent post, is not just some rand some completely random photos that I took for a week. Initially, it was for a project for my Digital Humanities course, but I wanted the picture to have a meaning or a story behind them. A story that would be mainly centered around the current pandemic and our new norm. If you have not noticed from the pictures, they were all taken from inside my home, and I wanted to share what my life has been for the past few months and how it is going. You will find that there are some pictures of games, crafts some of them done by me and some of them are just souvenirs that I keep with me from my home country. With the Photo Archive, I made I intended for it to be a part of history, I want it to show what life was like for me and anyone else that can relate from my pictures to what Covid-times were like. I want it to be something that people can look back on and think about how capable we are of adjusting to drastic changes for not just the benefit of ourselves and our families but for everyone in this whole world. Coming together as a globe for one common cause which is the welfare of all of mankind.

With that in mind, thank you again for reading, and stay safe, until next time.

~Bye~
